Religion in Government

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan, or Pakistan as it is better know, was created out of religious differences with India at the time of decolonization. Islam has always played a large part in the law and government of Pakistan and as time went on some Pakistani rulers tried to either intensify the faith or separate Pakistan completely from Islam. Ayub Khan was a military ruler in Pakistan and in 1963, he made plans to build Islamabad “city of Islam” to be the federal capital of Pakistan. Ayub Khan also made efforts to literally separate Islam from Pakistan by taking the Islamic out of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Although it was unsuccessful, this act along with others made by him showed that the opinion of Pakistan’s religious ties were different between rulers and the general public did not have a concise vote on the subject.
